Revert back & connectivity

by nathan
So, I spent a week and a half using the GNOME shell on my desktop, and enjoyed quite a number of things about it. The way that IM chats would pop up out of the notifications area was awesome! No switching windows to keep that conversation moving, and the manner in which things all seemed to work together, especially if the application was GNOME specific, really nice. But then I found some things that really bothered me. For instance, even though I told the shell I wanted GUAKE terminal to start up automatically when I logged in, it wouldn't. This matters to me, because I have been brushing up my coding skills and right now I run my applications on the command line. I also make lots of system changes via cli, so having GUAKE start automatically is necessary for me.
So, I switched back to the Ubuntu Unity shell, at least for now. Yes, it is a bit busier and less minimalist than the GNOME shell, but I do thrive upon having a certain level of productive indicators available to me. Plus, I enjoy having the dash/dock thing available to me on the left hand side of the screen. Yes, I know that there are gnome shell extensions which I could replicate this behavior, but it seemed unnecessary to adjust things to do this when I could just switch over to a different shell that already does more along the lines of what I want.
Do not get me wrong, I am not in long habits of behavior with my Linux desktop. I have been on OS X for the last two years and am coming back into fulltime usage of a linux desktop. I decided as I am going to use Unity, I removed the application Synapse as a launcher, and am going to depend upon the built in dash system to see how that helps/detracts from my workflow. So far, I am getting a good bit of connectivity with the world out there using my new set up and I am thrilled to be able to report that I have given things a good test. I will revisit this again, I am certain, that is one of the beautiful things about Linux on the desktop. But for now, Unity here I am.
