Hip Hooray Community!

by nathan

One of the most awesome things about Ubuntu, Linux and OpenSource is the community. Not only are you using a computer to do stuff, but you have an opportunity to make connections with the people who make the software you are using and even to help them make that software better.

Yesterday, I attended a meeting in an IRC chat room which was set up to organize volunteer efforts to improve ubuntu-accomplishments, which is a clever little set of projects that gives you a trophy case on your computer that shows how you have been effective in interacting with the community. I'll be mostly writing documentation for the developing software, which will give my technical writing skills a nice little woodshed to practice my chops. I also hope to be able to contribute some interesting new accomplishments that users will be able to 'win'.

Today, I added the development version of gtg (Getting Things GNOME), my tasklist manager. I was wildly excited to see that the new version has managed to get a deeper integration into the Unity desktop. Of course as it is the development version, I anticipate that there will be some problems or bugs which show up on a daily basis as I use this application. I will be able to help the developers of this program by accurately reporting the conditions which produced the problem and describe the manner in which the bug can be replicated. This is good QA stuff and I am very happy to be able to give some assistance like this, plus the bonus for me is I will be running the latest version of gtg!

Look at the new notification in the Top Bar, it's blue because I have tasks that are due! Yay!

Enough for now.
